Organ Recital by Jacob Benda

October 23, 2018 at 7:00 pm9:00 pm

Currently serving as the Director of Music and Liturgy at Nativity of Mary Catholic Church in the Twin Cities, Jacob Benda earned his Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from Louisiana State University in 2015 where his major professors were Dr. Herndon Spillman, organ, Dr. Robert Peck, music theory, and Michael Gurt, piano.

As a concert artist he has toured extensively throughout the United States, and his playing has been heard multiple times on American Public Media’s PIPEDREAMS. Upcoming performances include the 2018 East Texas Pipe Organ Festival, Westminster Presbyterian Church, Minneapolis, MN, St. Mary’s Cathedral in St. Cloud, MN, and the Roy A. Johnson Memorial Organ Series at the University of Arizona in Tucson, among others.   His debut recording, Music at Midnight: A Tonal Palette, was released on the Centaur Label in 2014 and was devoted to the organ music of Clarence Mader.  Subsequently, he lectured on Clarence Mader at Yale University, as well as the 2014 American Guild of Organists National Convention held in Boston, MA.   Benda serves on the Board of Directors for the Ruth and Clarence Mader Memorial Scholarship Fund and as the Sub-Dean for the Twin Cities Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.

Music to be performed at Christ Church includes compositions by Clarence Mader (1904-1971), selections from the “Gothique” organ symphony of   Charles-Marie Widor (1844-1937) and the Organ Sonata No. 2 in e minor, Op. 19 of August Gottfried Ritter (1811-1885).  The program will feature the Louisiana premiere of Pamela Decker’s (b. 1955) The Seven Last Words and Triumph of Christ.   Gramophone, the highly respected classical music review, has described Pamela Decker as a “vibrant example of the composer-performer…” and The American Organist as “a composer to reckon with—an organist who writes originally and idiomatically for her instrument.”
